Bosun School – The Wrap Up

Our 8th Bosun School has come to a close, and we had a lovely graduation ceremony at Lunenburg’s historic Dory Shop on Friday 18 December. Closing ceremonies are an important part of the Bosun School. Each of the participants works so hard – it isn’t easy, this school of ours. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get through it, and that is one of the reasons we only offer it to individuals who already have some amount of sea experience under their belt; people who already know they want to work at sea.  So much hard work deserves acknowledgement, and the closing ceremony is designed to provide that. In the final weeks of the school, Captain Moreland met individually with each of the participants to talk about what they see in their future. He was able to provide them with advice, suggestions, and recommendations, sometimes helping them with their plan and sometimes pointing them in another direction. Some of the graduates are planning going on to take additional courses from other institutions; some are going on to work on otherships; all were offered the opportunity to crew the ship as Picton Castle heads to Bermuda in February.  Almost all accepted the offer. Because as important as it is to have the   the time to dedicate to learning these skills on land, there is no better place to practice these new skills than at sea. Captain Sikkema is heading south with a very capable crew indeed! The graduation at the Dory Shop was a great night. It started with some music by Bosun School students Cici, Anders & Lars, along with a few drinks and snacks, then a sit-down meal of hot fish […]

Bosun School Launches and Rows A Dory

One of the main things we focus on at Bosun School is small boat handling. Students will practice handling boats of all kinds by rowing them, sailing them and driving them with motors. It’s one of the essential skills of a good mariner, being able to handle small boats. The best way to become proficient […]

Captain’s Log – Lunenburg!

By: Purser Allison Steele It was a wonderful visit to our home base in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Although many of our crew have spent a significant amount of time in this lovely port, some others had only heard of this beautiful little town.  The townspeople did not disappoint. A large gathering cheered us and […]

Day’s Run – 4 October, 2015

Noon Position: Docked in Lunenburg, NS, Canada Weather: Sunny, cool breeze, H 15c L 10c, barometer 1030. Much of what we do on the PICTON CASTLE involves a lot of coordinated effort from every person aboard. When I say this, your mind’s eye may immediately jump to the actual activity of sailing the ship which […]

Union – Mayreau – Bequia

By Kate “Bob” Addison As crew on Picton Castle you get pretty familiar with long ocean passages, two or three thousand nautical miles, maybe a month or so out of sight of land and often whole oceans between port visits – all pretty standard, pretty cool but no big deal. But it’s pretty novel to […]

Small Boat Adventures – Part 3

By Kate “Bob” Addison We re-join our sailors where we left them, standing on a perfect coral sand South Pacific beach, the boats secure and nothing to be done except set up a camp for the night… poor darlings. We rigged the big tarpaulins in a nice clearing between the trees for shelter just in […]

At Anchor At Mangareva

Picton Castle is swinging at anchor in the lagoon of Rikitea, Mangareva, Gambier Islands of French Polynesia. The Gambier Islands consist of an outer ring atoll with big islands inside the reef about 300 miles NW of Pitcairn Island – truly one of the most beautiful settings in the South Pacific and, extra bonus, a […]

Bosun School and the Martha Seabury

Late summer is probably the best time of year in Lunenburg. We’ve been blessed with outstanding weather, sunny, warm and pleasant. Hurricane Leslie, which we had been watching closely, kindly avoided Lunenburg. Convenient for the Bosun School, because it makes the wharf, the boatyard at the Dory Shop and any number of other outdoor spaces […]

Home in Lunenburg

By Kate “Bob” Addison August 8, 2012 And so our 2012 summer voyage has come to an end. We’ve sailed to Bermuda and back and explored the East Coast of the USA and Canada as far south as Savannah, Georgia and all the way back up to Halifax. We’ve had city adventures in New York […]

Picton Castle Bosun School Wraps Up This Week

Bosun School is in its final week here in Lunenburg. Our students from Canada, USA, Finland, Iceland and Denmark have all made great progress. It’s tough to believe that almost 14 weeks have gone by since students first joined us at the end of August. We’ve certainly packed a lot into that time, everything from […]
