Bosun School Goes Online

It has been a delight this summer to have a small group of keen marine students attending Picton Castle’s Bosun School here in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Offering Bosun School came together somewhat last minute, after we made the decision to delay Picton Castle’s planned departure from Lunenburg.  But with a ship and a fleet of small boats in Lunenburg, what would be better than putting together a small, tight-knit group of students to build their skills and have some fun sailing, boating and leaning about ships on Lunenburg Harbour in the summer time?

At the same time, we know that not everyone who might like to be part of this session of Bosun School was able to travel to Nova Scotia to join us in person.  As a result, we’re making some of the lessons available online so that interested folks can join us virtually.

We have been posting a new lesson on Vimeo every Wednesday for the past few weeks and will continue into September.  The first two are free of charge, the rest will be available for a small fee.   Each lesson gives a list of materials that you can gather before you start watching so you can do your own hands-on practice at home.  Lessons include painting techniques, knots, splices, blocks and tackles, and more.

Admittedly, this is pretty new to us.  Like so many organizations, we’re trying to take something that we are used to doing in person and do it online instead.  We’re open to your feedback and want to know what you think of this new and different format.  We have created a Facebook group where you can give us your comments and also ask questions about what you’re learning and interact with fellow learners.

Please try out our free lessons and join the Facebook group to let us know how you made out!
