Leg 3: Mallorca to St. George's

November 12, 2008–February 20, 2009
Joining port: Mallorca, Spain
Departure port: St. George's, Grenada

Cross an ocean and the Equator—twice!

Join the exotic third leg of the Voyage of the Atlantic to sail from the Mediterranean island of Mallorca across the Atlantic Ocean and the Equator (twice!) to Grenada, the spice isle of the West Indies.

This portion of the voyage may offer the greatest cultural diversity as we depart Europe for calls in the islands of the Eastern Atlantic, in North and Western Africa, coastal Brazil and the Caribbean.

Sail from buzzing markets to secluded beaches

Experience vibrant markets in Morocco, the natural amphitheatre surrounding the city of Funchal in the Madeira Islands, the volcanic Canary and Cape Verde Islands, the bustle and noise of urban Africa at Senegal, the stunningly beautiful and secluded beaches of Fernando de Noronha and the charm of the Carenage in St. George's, Grenada.

Many of these places are off the beaten path and sailing in aboard a square-rigger is a fittingly rare way to arrive.

Enjoy a stunning stuns'ls passage

Passage making will be a highlight of Leg 3 as Picton Castle approaches the South Atlantic Ocean and the trade winds that blow reliably fresh. We anticipate setting stuns'ls, an extra set of sails that can add a knot or more to our speed.

These long sea passages are ideal for developing your skills—improve your helmsmanship by steering by the stars, assist the sailmaker with seaming, help the bosun with a rigging project aloft, practice taking noon sights with a sextant on the quarterdeck, get working on your canvas ditty bag or read up on small boat handling so you're ready for the next port. Find peace in the simplicity of life aboard and the daily routine of standing watch, unplugged temporarily from the rest of the world.

Meet the ocean ruler, King Neptune!

Finally, this section of the voyage offers the only opportunity to cross the Equator with all the time-honoured traditions and rituals that entails. It's something you'll simply never forget. Apply now to become a trainee.
